The slack adjuster consists of a housing, two gears, and
lining wear causes the air chamber stroke to increase
two gear covers. Brake adjustments are made through
beyond two inches, reset the stroke to 1.5".

doing slack or yoke adjustment.

Test and Adjustment, Initial Slack Adjustment.
(1) Lift semitrailer so all wheels off the ground.
Block the frame securely.
(2) Release all spring forces from slack
adjuster and camshaft by applying air to the air brake
chamber.
(3) For the first adjustment, turn the adjusting
nut counterclockwise until the brake lining is tight against
the drum, Fig. 4-45. Wheel will not rotate freely.
(4) Turn the adjusting nut in the opposite
direction for only two or three clicks so that the brake

lining just clears the drum. Rotate the drum to check the
clearance. It should be between 1.5" and 2". When
