k. Use the same downshifting procedure for descending a steep glade. In general, you should
go down a steep grade in the same gear, or one gear lower than that required to climb the same
hill. Use your service foot brake to keep the truck from overspeeding. Always keep the engine
rpm below the red arrow shown on the tachometer (2), and the truck speed below the
maximum road speed allowable for the gear ratio in use, as shown on the instruction data
plate (1).
CAUTION
The service brakes should be applied with an on-and-off motion when descending
steep grades. This prevents overheating of the brakeshoe linings. Do not coast
downhill with the clutch disengaged. The engine or transmission could be damaged
if gears are engaged at high speed.
If the operating condition of the truck is such that double clutching becomes
necessary to shift the gears, notify organizational maintenance.
