MAINTENANCE AFTER FORDING
a. G e n e r a l . A l t h o u g h m a t e r i e l u n i t h o u s i n g s a r e s e a l e d t o p r e v e n t t h e f r e e f l o w
of water into the housings, it must be realized that due to the necessary design of
these assemblies, some water may enter, especially during submersion. T h e f o l l o w i n g
s e r v i c e s should be accomplished on all materiel which has been exposed to some depth
o f w a t e r o r c o m p l e t e l y s u b m e r g e d , e s p e c i a l l y i n s a l t w a t e r . P r e c a u t i o n s should be
t a k e n as soon as practicable to halt deterioration and avoid damage before the
materiel is driven extensively in regular service.
b. L u b r i c a t e .
Clean and lubricate all parts as specified on the lubrication
c h a r t . R e m o v e wheels; clean and repack bearings. M a k e s u r e t h a t l u b r i c a n t i s
generously forced into each lubrication fitting to force out any water present.

Check
all
electrical
connections for
corrosion.
d. P a i n t . C l e a n all exposed painted surfaces and touch up paint where
necessary.
e. A l u m i n u m o r M a g n e s i u m I f v e h i c l e r e m a i n s i n s a l t w a t e r f o r a n y
a p p r e c i a b l e l e n g t h o f t i m e , a l u m i n u m or magnesium parts which were exposed to water
will probably be unfit for further use and must be replaced.

MAINTENANCE AFTER OPERATION ON UNUSUAL TERRIAN
a. Mud. T h o r o u g h c l e a n i n g a n d l u b r i c a t i o n o f a l l p a r t s a f f e c t e d m u s t b e
accomplished as soon as possible after operation in mud, particularly when a sea of
l i q u i d m u d h a s b e e n t r a v e r s e d . C l e a n all suspension components and lubricate as
s p e c i f i e d o n t h e l u b r i c a t i o n o r d e r . Repack wheel bearings, if necessary.
Sand or Dust. T o u c h up all painted surfaces damaged by sand.
Lubricate
