The burning of polyurethane foams is
dangerous. Due to the chemical com-
position of a polyurethane foam, toxic
fumes are released when it is burned
or heated. If it is burned or heated in-
doors, such as during a welding opera-
tion in its proximity, precautions should
be taken to adequately ventilate the
area. An exhaust system equivalent to
that of a spray paint booth should be
used. Air supply respirators, approved
by the National Institute for Occupa-
tional Safety and Health or the U.S.
Bureau of Mines, should be used for all
welding in confined spaces and when
ventilation is inadequate.
Individuals who have chronic or recur-
rent respiratory conditions, including
allergies and asthma, should not be
employed in this environment.
