EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION.
1.
Check for worn valve guides (para 7-72).
Step 1.
Replace guides, valves, and seals.
Step 2.
Check for worn or sticking piston rings (para 7-31).
Replace rings if necessary.
Step 3.
Check for air leaks to crankcase.
Replace gaskets and seals as necessary.
METALLIC KNOCKING, CLICKING, OR POUNDING FROM CRANKCASE OR CYLINDER BLOCK.

Check for worn or loose connecting rod bearings (para 7-31.).
Step 1.
Replace bearings if necessary.
Check for loose piston and connecting rod assembly (para 7-31).
Step 2.
Repair or replace assembly.
LOW ENGINE COMPRESSION.
3.
Check for sticking valves (para 7-72).
Step 1.
See Malfunction 4, STICKING VALVES.
Check for leaking valves (para 7-72).
Step 2.
Clean and, if necessary, regrind valves and valve seats.
Check for worn or sticking piston rings (para 7-31).
Step 3.
Replace rings if necessary. Check condition of cylinder walls.
Check for worn cylinder walls and pistons (para 7-31).
Step 4.
Refinish cylinder walls. Repair or replace pistons.
4.
STICKING VALVES.
Step 1.
Check for dirty, scored, or gummy valve stems or guides (para 7-72).
Check for weak or broken springs (para 7-72).
Step 2.
Replace springs.
Check clearance between valve stem and guide (para 7-72).
Step 3.
Correct clearance.
